Welcome to the website for the Town of Rock. As Chairperson for the Town, I invite you to browse our website for any information you need regarding the Town. Our Town hall is located in the Village of Afton at 5102 S County Road D(Afton Road), Afton, Wisconsin.
Rock Township is in central Rock County. Rock Township is defined by the Rock River running through it and is also noted for its beautiful agriculture landscapes. The Town is located to the south and west of the City of Janesville. The City of Beloit is located just a few miles south of the Town. The Town encompasses about 30 square miles and is in close proximity to Interstate 39/90 and the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport. The Town is bisected by the two major roadways, Highways 51 and 11. The unincorporated hamlet of Afton is at the heart of the Town. The State of Wisconsin measured the Town's population to be 3,326 in 2007.
Once home to Native Americans known as the Mound Builders and Winnebago Tribes. The Town was established on February 17, 1842. Settled by farmers from the state of New York; there were at one time five villages in the Town including Wisconsin City, Koshkonong, Rock-port, Monterey and Middledale. All were consumed by the City of Janesville with the exception of Middledale which was later re-named Afton in 1855. The Village of Afton houses numerous businesses including a post office, the Afton Community Church and long-time businesses like Skip's Friendly Village, S & H Auto and Afton Pub and Park. J & B Western Store, Afton Family Market, Bass Creek Expresso are also located in Afton and always welcome your business.
The Town also boasts a Town park located on Eau Claire Roads. The Town park is home to the thriving Rock Summer Baseball Program for Town children, as well as welcoming children from the surrounding areas.
The Town has also recently acquired land to enable the Rock Town Cemetery to expand as needed. The cemetery is located on Cemetery Road on the west side of the river.
Within the Town of Rock, the largest areas of agriculture exist on the west side of the Rock River. There you can find dairy, beef, hog and grain farms. Much of the farmland has been in the familiies for more than five generations. Rock Township is also home to MacFarland Pheasant Farm which is the largest pheasant farm in the world.
It is the vision of the Town of Rock to retain its agricultural character in addition to protecting the key features including the Rock River and the Village of Afton. At the same time, the Town seeks to promote a mix of new development in carefully planned areas near existing development and along Highway 51 to ensure fiscal strength.
